Senior representative from Brand New Stardom interviewed about Block B’s controversy

By now, anyone who’s a fan of K-pop is aware of 7-member idol group Block B. One of the boys’ interviews which took place in Thailand January 30th has stirred major controversy, and the boys have been receiving slanderous remarks from the public and the media alike.

The most sarcastic of remarks said, “They sure did their noise marketing properly,” deeply upsetting the members and their agency. When Star In caught up with Block B backstage at Mnet‘s ‘M! Countdown‘, all the members wore long faces. When approached for an interview, their manager denied the request. Instead, Star In met with a high ranking representative from their agency to ask a few questions.

- Did you neglect to act upon the situation, knowing what happened?
▲ Not at all. I didn’t know at first because I didn’t travel with them to Thailand for the interview, but I was shocked upon seeing the fans’ criticisms. We were going to release an official apology on the 20th, but the controversy had already caught fire by the 19th. The attacks coming at us were so uncontrollable we didn’t know how to control the situation at hand. We got one step behind, and after that, everything got really difficult.

- Are you saying that this is unfair?
▲ No. We deserve to be criticized, 100%. I am responsible as well. The apology statement was typed online after the members personally wrote it by hand. The Block B members were heavily disciplined and they learned a hard lesson. But to see the netizens’ comments be turned into news articles without proof or confirmation was really hurtful.

- There are netizens saying you sought revenge against Nichkhun who started this problem.
▲ What kind of revenge would a small company like ours be able to seek against JYP Entertainment? And if we did try to bring down Nichkhun, do you think it would work? We’re actually quite thankful to Nichkhun. It’s only natural for him to become upset and criticize our wrongdoing, and he did his part by asking fans to refrain from attacking Block B. He said that he hoped the boys had learned through this mistake, and if it weren’t for Nichkhun, this could’ve gotten more out of hand. We are grateful for his understanding nature.

- How are the Block B members?
▲ They are extremely panicked and worried. They’re about to step on stage right now, but they aren’t themselves. I’m just worried that they might have had suicidal thoughts. The boys were only focused on wanting to stand out and be noticed, and they were a little thoughtless. But the boys aren’t stupid, they did not have ill intent when they said the things they did. A part of me is relieved. They are being disciplined well while they are still young. They are reflecting on their actions in remorse, so much to the point they probably wish they’d never been born.

- When will you personally apologize to the Thai citizens?
▲ Like I said, we got one step behind trying to deal with all of the criticism and attacks, and we lost the right timing. Anything we say now is going to sound like an excuse. And it’s not like we can go to Thailand because we want to and immediately apologize, there are orders and principles to how things go about. We are discussing many different routes we can take. We should have something official by next week. And of course, we will also be visiting Thailand.

- Is there anything you would like to request?
▲ We’ve hit rock bottom in despair. We were wrong, and we deeply apologize. The Block B members and myself are extremely repentant. I think this incident will be an opportunity for the boys to become a little more mature. I hope that you guys will give the boys a chance to learn from their mistakes. If you want to further reprimand us, I will gladly receive the punishment. It is all my fault. Reprimand if you must, but know that the boys are being genuine. These kids are younger than you think. I hope you will be a little understanding.

Ahead of this interview, Block B’s agency Brand New Stardom stated that “all the members are deeply repentant,” and posted personally hand-written apology letters on their official fan cafe.

Cho PD talks about Block B’s unique growth on ‘Lulu Lala’

Block B and their agency chief, Cho PD, recently appeared on MBC‘s ‘Lululala‘, where they showed off their entertainment skills.

Cho PD made his first foray into entertainment programs through ‘Lululala’, despite making his debut as a singer 14 years ago. ”I don’t have any regrets. Everyone including myself must make concessions to obtain good results,” he expressed, demonstrating his dedication to helping Block B’s promotions as much as possible.

Cho PD also revealed that he gave permission for the Block B members to produce their own songs. Though there was some backlash from those who believed that it was a risky move, Cho PD persisted in making this happen.

As the head of Block B’s agency, Brandnew Stardom Entertainment, Cho PD got to witness firsthand the trials his group had to face during their debut period. ”When Block B debuted, I criticized the producers for not giving credit to the members who composed and produced the song; the producers responded by pulling out, taking their songs with them. It was an uncertain situation where the Block B members suffered a lot.”

Though Cho PD and Block B both endured difficult times in the beginning, the strong impression made by Block B’s comeback track “Nanrina” is paving a smoother path for them through the rocky terrain of the industry.

Boys and Girls It's the B.B
Don't fool yourself
I got your back you must up
BLOCK is bang

Open your heavy eyelids
Move up and enjoy this
trouble make freeze
Why are you scared?
It's a waste to live life like this
Open your mouth and say at least one word
Student, will you close your book?

Gather Gather Gather Here
Turn Turn Turn Your Head
An obvious win plays foul when bored
Turn this bitter life into something delicious
Silence is our traitor
Throw your worries and anxieties towards the sky
Jump up

Hey, what are you doing?
Quit hiding man what's up with you?
Spread your wings
Get off track just for today
All the things you've build up, let go let go
Shout louder until your voice is gone
Go crazy tonight as if it's the end
Go and tell them and even your friends
Oh that we're here

Shake your legs around and around, with me inside a cage
The numbers on the calendar that are on the floor are red
From the roots to the peak so you can all reach them
Always turning my back
and leaning against the wall to complain
Your extra life is just a supporting role
It's exciting just do ya thing
Now it's time to show off your hidden talents

Gather Gather Gather Here
Turn Turn Turn Your Head
Just for today shake it shake it
Get off track scutter scutter
And your voice loud and resonant
5 4 3 2 1 out

Hey, what are you doing?
Quit hiding man what's up with you?
Spread your wings
Get off track just for today
All the things you've build up, let go let go
Shout louder until your voice is gone
Go crazy tonight as if it's the end
Go tell them and even to your friends
Oh that we're here

The day goes by fast like a blink of an eye
Everybody becomes one to stay up all night
Go outside and rock your head
Go Go Go go head a Rock'em
The day goes by fast like a blink of an eye
Everybody becomes one to stay up all night

Just looking at you makes my heart go

OH walking the streets with you

I love it right now
When thinking about the upcoming weekend
I love you, your pretty smile
I need you, it makes me smile too
I sleep to the thought of you, and wake up thinking of you
I even become jealous of your younger brother
Will you come to understand my heart?

Now lean lean lean on me

Why is my heart like like like this?
Beautiful ma love love love
When I see you U HOO HOO always U HOO HOO
although I see you today and see you tomorrow I
think for you

oh, the word that I would like to hear is that your “mine”
The thing that I hate hearing the most is “see you tomorrow”
The word that I am moved by is “only you”
You’ve changed my emotions back to when I was an adolescent
My feelings have been caught
I feel so hot hot hot
You’ve heated up my heart
Now I’ve put everything else aside except you
Marriage? Oh what the heck let’s do it
I grow an even tighter bond with you
I'm in love

Now lean lean lean on me
Beautiful ma love love love
When I see you U HOO HOO always U HOO HOO

Why is my heart like like like this?
Beautiful ma love love love
When I see you U HOO HOO always U HOO HOO
baby, although I see you today and see you tomorrow I
think for you

Can you stay still, so my lips touch your cheeks
Please don’t get sick, so I don’t cry worried
I got a love got a love

baby never let you down
I got a love I got a love
I got a love got a love
I got a love I got a love
baby never let you down
I got a love
anytime I close my eyes I always seem to miss you
Even if you say your love is a lie, I just wanna fall for it
So I can lose my mind at this moment right now
I wanna tell ya
I’ve never felt like this before
when I am with you time flies
I’m so afraid
Why am I like this?

My love for you keeps on growing

[NEWS] 110623 Block B sells out in pre-orders

Rookie idol group Block B’s debut album is attracting attention for showing exceptional sales.

The boys are known for being the production of years of effort by Cho PD, and within two months of their debut, their debut album’s first batch of copies seem to be in good standing. Because they had a reach goal higher than other rookie groups, they were criticized for being ‘excessive.’ Fortunately, their high number of sales has surprised industry representatives positively.

Cho PD, who’s also the chairman of their fanclub, said, “Judging from the speed at which they’re garnering fans and the progress their international fans have made, we decided that it was a reasonable goal. But we had no idea that the first batch of copies would be sold out with just pre-orders alone two days before the album’s official release. It’s difficult for us to judge how many more batches we need to make.”

He continued, “Because the supplies aren’t distributed yet, and there were a lot of international orders as well as Korean orders, we are free from being suspected for buying back albums. Once they begin their official promotions, we predict that the sales will get higher.”

Before the release of their debut music video and album, the boys had to deal with the leaking of their content on an international site.

Block B's Upcoming Album Gets A 19+ Rating.

Many fans were happy to know that boy group Block B would be returning with a new mini album, “New Kids On The Block”, later this week. This album, however, has just recently been struck with a 19+ rating. The rating technically means that minors won’t be able to buy the mini album online or in stores, unless an adult is with them to actually buy it.

ChoPD didn’t know of the situation, but left a message when he discovered news of the rating this morning.

“Heard some news this morning that’s making me angry. Rated 19+? I am looking into it.” and later “How can they review an album before its release? Wasn’t that abolished during Seo Taiji’s era? All the losers that are trying to hold us back, ‘go play somewhere i’m busy.’”

Block B isn’t the only idol group who’s been getting 19+ rated these days. Many new songs, including Block B’s own “Freeze”, ZE:A’s “Be My Girl” and X-5’s “Fantasy” have been banned from music shows for their 19+ content.

What do you think of these ratings?

Cho PD and Block B have a mentor and mentee interview

Block B and their producer, Cho PD, recently sat down for an interview with BNT News and revealed their thoughts on one another and their careers.

While Cho PD was like a proud father, reporters noticed that the members of Block B actually contrasted against their stronger image with innocent personalities.

Check out their first interview together below!

===

Q. “Why did you create Block B?”

Cho PD: “You can’t become an artist with just talent these days. If you want to be popular, you have to be skilled in singing, dancing, character, and even looks. I really wanted to find good gemstones.”

Q. “What was Cho PD’s first impression like?”

Block B: “He kind of looked like a monkey…”
Zico: “When I first saw him two years ago, he looked like an uncle. He was wearing a t-shirt and jeans so I wasn’t too intimidated by him.”
Jaehyo: “He has extremely nice skin. I knew from the moment I saw him that he was the CEO.”
Taeil: “I was only used to seeing him on stage, but seeing him in person wasn’t as scary as I thought it’d be.”
U-Kwon: “The first time I saw him, I only saw his back as he was walking in for a meeting. I found out that he was the CEO later, so my first impression of him is just of his back.”
P.O: “He has a greater body than what he looks like on TV, so I was really scared of his first impression.”
Kyung: “He looked cold and chic, like the son of a rich family.”
B-Bomb: “I was in his music video when I was in high school, so I didn’t think I’d see him again as my CEO. Back then, he was someone I wanted to emulate, but seeing him in person now, he was normal.”

Q. “Cho PD seems like a father to Block B.”

Cho PD: “They say that your kids will learn bad habits if you just let everything slide, but I want to give them respect. I chose kids that are worthy of that respect, and I know that they’re going to be raised into a position of respect. Just because I give them that respect earlier doesn’t mean that they’ll go wrong. It just means I have that much more expectations for them.”

Block B: “When we’re tired from rehearsals, he’ll visit our dorm with delicious food. When we said we wanted to eat meat on a radio show, he bought us meat all week long.”

Q. “What made Cho PD so captivated by Block B?”

Zico: “Rap.”
Jaehyo: “My visuals? I heard that he fell in love with my emotional voice.”
Taeil: “My singing, of course.”
U-Kwon: “He chose me as his dark horse, but I really don’t know why. I think he thought well of my improvements.”
Kyung: “I think my voice. I’m a good rapper, but I also have good character.”
B-Bomb: “I think my performance, and also the fact that I had met him twice like fate.”

Q. “Which member doesn’t listen to you the most?”

Cho PD: “They all listen to me well now. It’s not a problem for me because I had told them before, ‘If you don’t want to do it, leave. Only those that can handle it must stay.’ Only the members that were willing to put their lives on the line are left now.”

Block B: “We all listen to him well, and U-Kwon is always working hard. Zico has a tendency to rebel or go off track, but he always listens to whatever U-Kwon tells him to do.”

Q. “Is Block B also pressured to take care of their bodies?”

Cho PD: “I made them work out from the beginning, but it’s hidden now. Personally, I think that bodies with too much muscle… mmm, I’ll get antis if I say it like this, but I think it’s kind of countrified. Trying to look cool with a good body worked in the 80s with people like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone. In this generation, it’s about tall, modern looking things. As far as exposure goes, I respect the opinions of the members.”

Block B: “We’re really hidden. Zico works out a lot and Kyung does too, but once he stops, he stops for good. We also hope that there will never come a point where we have to expose our bodies.”

Kyung: “I’m a man like fire.”

Q. “Does Block B have a set amount to spend on food like other idols?”

Cho PD: “I think in all of Korea, our company pays the most for meals. Aside from the expenses, I’d like for the members to eat more healthy food like chicken breasts and whatnot, but they eat too much fast food instead.”

Block B: “We’re allowed exactly $6.50 USD!”
Jaehyo: “Before our debut, we were only allowed to eat bean paste stew. I think because our CEO is so busy that he doesn’t know, but we’ve just now ‘leveled up’ to eat soft tofu stew.”
P.O: “I got in trouble for eating fried fish yesterday.”
Block B: “We don’t eat fast food because we want to. We want to eat healthy food too but our manager says we don’t have time and buys us hamburgers (laughter).”

Q. “To conclude the interview, could you say something on your future goals and for your fans?”

Cho PD: “There’s a lot of antis because Block B isn’t doing something that’s considered ‘gangster hip hop.’ We’re not, however, putting everything into our title tracks. The market is a single market, and we’re doing our best to show their true colors, but it seems people are being impatient with that. For now, we’re going to be on a full run until Block B wins first place. Only after the kids are on a strong foundation will I be releasing my own albums. I am also considering creating other groups.”

Block B: “We worked hard to show a new image with our first mini-album. It’s an album that’s chock full of things, so please look forward to it. We will be taking this opportunity to show our true talents.”

===

Block B will be releasing their first mini-album, “New Kids on the Block“, on June 23rd.

Block B Interview on Inkigayo Magazine + Photo

Inkigayo Magazine - Block B

[BLOCK B]
We want to earn the titles of ‘uniqueness’, ‘talent’, and ‘freedom.’ From the moment we joined our company, our CEO told us that it’s run as a system where we do everything ourselves, so they will not force us to do anything. He said, “You have to learn how to improve yourself on your own, and your concept will be decided on your own. If you do not receive the response you desired, then you must take responsibility for that.” All of us like this system, and we hope to continue to pursue unique and free music. We’re ‘freedom idols.’ (laughter)

[IDOL] We hate that people view us through a stereotype. As opposed to hitting it big with an addictive hook song or a variety show and drama, we’re greedy to be acknowledged for ‘true music.’ We’re always making an effort to differentiate ourselves from the other idols. On a small scale, it’s things like our outfit and hair styles, and on a grander scale, it’s things like our music. Please anticipate our music. We also have to attract 10,000 members for our fancafe before the release of our mini-album, so please join! (laughter)

[SHOUT] People say a lot of things about our stage, especially hip hop fans since they anticipated us the most. But the fact that we’re even being talked about, whether good or bad, means that we’re still receiving attention in one way or the other. Please watch over us and continue to give us your advice and criticisms. We’re going to be running at the top of the game, anyway! (laughter) It’s hard to deal with everything, but we consider it just one of the processes of growing. We are ready to take your criticisms.

We’re also receiving all of the presents and snacks sent to us and are extremely grateful for them. There are a lot of fans that want us to put up proof shots on our Twitters, but there’s just so many that it’s difficult for us to take one for every one, which upsets us greatly. Please be understanding of that. We promise to work hard in in Korea and cross over to Japan with a better image soon, so please anticipate and support us.

Inkigayo Magazine - Taeil

[IT’S ME]
I’m an AB bloodtype, and some people say I have a tendency to be a bit psycho. I think I act like any other person, but I think that registers as unique to other people.

[DREAM] I’ve always loved music and first joined a music club and promoted for six years under that. I wasn’t under an agency, but we had a lot of members so we’d travel in a van whenever we performed at events. Performing is something you can’t learn from reading a book, but rather something you pick up from experience, which is what I learned with the group. I randomly auditioned for “Birth of a Great Star” and suddenly got picked. It was a program that helped me cross from underground to mainstream.

[ON THE STAGE] I think that I’m not eye-catching, but I do have my own charms and a voice that isn’t common but still recognizable. I’ve only sung for about five years, so coming out as an idol now, it was really difficult to learn how to dance. Since I’m the main vocalist, I receive one-shots from the cameras a lot, and looking back, I thought it was so funny how my face, voice, and body were all doing different things. I didn’t like how I was dancing and even more how my eyes looked so small on screen. I look a bit dazed when I don’t have eye make up on, so starting with our “Wanna B” promotions, I began wearing sun glasses. Unfortunately, they’re so big that they keep sliding off my face. Lately, I’ve been trying to pick up gestures that I can pretend to do when I’m actually just fixing my sunglasses (laughter).

[EPISODE] There’s an extremely expensive mic in our recording room. Our composer doesn’t let us touch the mic so we just leave it how it’s positioned. Since I’m the main vocalist, I stand in the middle, but we have to lower the mic because I’m so short. Every time we have to reposition it, the composer will come in to do it. I guess he got tired of it because he said he’d buy socks for me to put insoles in (laughter).

[MEMBER] Zico looks aggressive so he’s misunderstood a lot. My first impression of him was that he looked very strong. He was wearing a school uniform with long hair and I didn’t think he looked like a student at first. ”Was he wearing a school uniform for fun?” His face and his uniform just didn’t match (laughter). When I first saw Jaehyo, he was so handsome that I felt captivated. “How could he be so handsome?” I thought to myself. I just stared at him.

[TATTOO] “Never forget your roots.” I want to never forget my roots and always show my best.

Inkigayo Magazine - B-Bomb

[IT’S ME]
People say that they think I’d be really quiet, but I really want to break that image. I’m not quiet at all. I joke around a lot in our dorms so I’m sure this image will be broken once we shoot a reality show (laughter). I also like looking at magazines and collecting shoes and hats. There isn’t any one member that doesn’t know how to dress themselves, but Jaehyo and Kyung are a bit lacking in that department. I have a lot of interest in fashion, but it’s really maknae P.O. that’s fashionable.

[HARDSHIP] After I first left the company I was training in, I rebelled it. I knew that I wasn’t young anymore and I had so many more things to think about. I was so upset in not being able to train anymore and realized then just how precious the opportunity to train really is. In the team I was with before, they were all my hyungs. After joining Block B, I had suddenly become one of the oldest so I had to pay extra careful to my every actions, as well as work on bringing the team together. In terms of talent, I was also pressured in having to set a good example for my dongsengs.

[EPISODE] This is something that happens often. When we do the laundry in our dorm, the shower water gets weaker. The members that are showering will always yell outside to turn off the laundry machine for a bit. We also run out of towels a lot because we have so many members, so that naturally makes the kids not want to wash often. I think I’d have to choose Jaehyo as the member that doesn’t wash often. I share a room with Jaehyo and he doesn’t like cleaning up. I have to yell at him, “Jaehyo! Clean this up!” and force him to do it. I keep talking about Jaehyo, but that doesn’t mean it’s because he’s dirty or anything (laughter).

[MEMBER] On my first day of training, I was having a hard time adjusting when Jaehyo came up to me and said, “Come over here~ Let’s go eat out together. You can do this just like this.” He was taking care of me so well so I automatically assumed, “Oh! He must’ve trained here for a long time!” I was really grateful until I found out that he had joined the company just a day before me. He’s a natural leader, which shocked me. I thought he had trained for at least three years (laughter).

[TATTOO] “If you’re desperate for it, it will come true.” In order to become a singer, I learned how to dance really hard with a desperate mindset, and my dreams really did come true.

Inkigayo Magazine - Jaehyo

[IT’S ME]
I look cold when I have my mouth closed, but the way I talk and the way I act is actually awkward and childish, so people consider that my ‘reversal charm.’ People tell me to “close my mouth” whenever I talk. The only consistent thing I’ve heard for the past five years was, “You need to close your mouth.”

[HARDSHIP] There wasn’t anything particularly difficult for me at all. Before our album was released, I withstood our recording and training with my excitement for our debut. The members of Block B were chosen in a survival, competition system so it was hard to become the final chosen member. There definitely was pressure in having to compete against people your own age with similar dreams. Every night, I’d stay up worrying to myself wondering, “What if I’m dropped?” Thinking about it now, I think I learned a lot from those experiences and it made me become a stronger person. If I hadn’t endured those times, then I would probably just be watching Block B through the television right now. Training might be painful, but now that I’ve become a member, I think it’s something I can look back on as a fond memory.

[MUSIC] This is something that we have to work harder on, but personally, I hope that Block B’s music becomes more familiar with the public. Even if it’s not their style at first, we’d like for them to open up to our music and feel a sense of familiarity, like a tattoo on their body. I guess I’d want nothing more than for Block B’s musical identity to be melted into our music as well. In the future, I want to hear that our group is a group that knows how to communicate with the public.

[EPISODE] I once bought four packs of face masks that had five face masks in each, which comes out to a total of 20. I lined them up in the fridge and used them starting from the top. One day, I felt something was off so I looked at the bottom and saw that three of the five were missing. I was just going to let it go, thinking that the members had used it, but I got angry the more I thought of them using the ones from the bottom. So sneaky! I felt betrayed so I asked the members and they all said they didn’t use it. I see that there’s a member with a better skin lately, I wonder who the culprit is? (laughter).

[TATTOO] “Always be humble, and always have your head down even when praised.” This is something my parents always said to me so I always kept it close to heart.

Inkigayo Magazine - ZICO

[IT’S ME]
In my dorm, on TV, and in front of my family, I’m the same person. I think my charm is that I’m not fake. I’m not sure about my personality being masculine or anything, but I do think I’m energetic (smiles).

[DREAM] I’ve always loved hip hop music since junior high. After starting music on my own, I knew that I wanted to just be a ‘musician.’ When I first received an offer to become an ‘idol’ from my agency, it is true that I didn’t want to. Thinking about it more, though, I realized that being an idol is something I can do at my age and that it was also a great opportunity to spread hip hop to the mainstream public. I’m also sure that it would help not only our musical careers, but my growth as a producer as well.

[HARDSHIP] I receive a lot of stress when I’m planning out the overall frame of a song and putting lyrics and melodies to it. I want to create a song in ‘A style’, but the more parts I put in, it turns into a ‘B style.’ It’s really hard splitting a song between seven people, and even more difficult to create a song that satifies everyone. ”Freeze!” is a song that was supposed to have a Far East Movement-like feel, but after lengthening some parts and putting electronic elements into it, it ended up sounding like any other pop song. The song had a nice concept beat-wise and I know that I should have gone rougher with it, so it’s a bit disappointing in that regards.

[MUSIC] The hip hop community had a lot of expectations from me before my debut with Block B. I think they expected me to go with something unorthodox to reform the music industry, so there was a lot of people that said, ‘He’s no different from the other idols,’ after we debuted. When I was reading those replies, Cho PD hyung told me, “You can’t lend yourself to the words of others. You have to grow to become someone that can move not a small community, but all of Korea.” I’ve put down some of the pressures I’ve felt and am just enjoying music as freely as possible.

[TATTOO] I want to get a tattoo that says ‘Never Stop.’ It’s hard to get back into it once you stop so I think people should never stop what they’re doing. Like dancers going into a slump when they stop dancing, it’s the same for music. I will never stop pursuing music.

Inkigayo Magazine - Kyung

[IT’S ME]
I think me, myself, is a charm (laughter). I’m the team’s ‘atmosphere maker’, and that’s a charm that you can’t buy or learn from anywhere or anyone. What am I lacking in? Aside from my ‘height’ and the ‘size of my head’, I’m confident in everything.

[DREAM] When I was in the States, I listened to a song Zico had made called ‘Kuek.’ I remember bursting out, “Wow! This is really cool”, and I’m not lying when I say this, but I immediately thought, “Girls might like me if I rap like this!” I started rapping with that naive thought (laughter). I began by buying a mic and sticking it in the computer and uploading my raps on the internet under the name of ‘Holke.’ After some time, Zico told me that he had sent a demo tape to an agency and got contracted, and offered me to come over. That’s how I became a singer.

[MUSIC] Our focus on this album was to show something that only Block B could do to differentiate us from the rest. We’re going to be pursuing music with a hip hop base because we we hope to bring the hip hop genre closer to the mainstream public. Through our music, we want to show everyone that we’re not just idols, but ‘free idols’ that have their own color and pursue the music they want.

[ON THE STAGE] During our “Wanna B” promotions, my hair style really bothered me. My hair would keep splitting so I had to keep brushing it, and I got really tired of doing that. When I promoted underground, we were able to act however we want, but now that we’re on TV, every little thing like our facial expressions and our fingers gets caught. Unlike other idols, most of our members have a lot of stage experience so I wasn’t worried about our live performances.

[TATTOO] I’d want the tattoo, “Know Yourself.” I thought I was handsome until Jaehyo hyung joined and we took a picture together. I can’t express what I felt at the time in words. On a radio show, I wanted to give the feel of a musician so I would cringe and stuff while singing “Is It Only Me?” When I turned to monitor it, I realized… ‘I really need to know how myself.’ If I really act however I want, I’m really going to be kicked out~ From now on, I’m going to find something that fits me for both my facial expressions and my physical appearance.

Inkigayo Magazine - U-Kwon

[IT’S ME]
My charms are my eyes (smiles). The fans and staff of our company said that they like seeing me smile. Being a timid blood type A, there’s the stereotype of being like “I’m sorry I can’t be understanding~” but I’m trying to always to always stay optimistic and to just let everything pass on a better note.

[HARDSHIP] There was no official confirmation that I would be a member of Block B from the company and I too wasn’t confident. I only learned hip hop through dancing and in the musical aspect, I lacked a lot. I was in a state of shock when I heard the company speak about me in saying, “Do we continue to take Ukwon?” Zico told me, “There’s a lot of talk about you within the company. They said that if you don’t work hard, we won’t be in the same team. Work harder and I’ll be there to block for you” which became a lot of strength to me. Later on Zico had said to the company, “There’s a lot of sides that Ukwon hasn’t been able to show yet which are hidden, so just wait a bit and look out for him” in which Ukwon was really thankful once he had found out. Our boss Cho PD complimented that I was the one who grew in terms of skills and appearance wise amongst the rest since my first day as a trainee up until now and that if I work harder than right now, I have even more potential.

[ON THE STAGE] I wear a bandage around my arm on stage. My muscles aren’t tight around, so the bandage keeps slipping. I should work out my arms so that I can gain some muscle (smiles).

[TATTOO] I want to get a tattoo that says “Love makes Me Strong.” The fans and family who give me love, as well as the love from my members makes me stronger.

[FAMILY] Before I went to middle school, my father passed away and so it was just me, my mother, and my brother as our family situation wasn’t great either, so my older brother worked to pay for my academy fees. My brother said, “Even if other people compliment you, I’m not going to. Don’t ever become arrogant.” Despite having a cold personality, he’s like a dependent father figure to me. In not being able to satisfy my family’s expectations and always spending an uneasy trainee life, now I was able to make my debut and having an album out, my mom especially was really glad (smiles).

[BLOCK B] It’s bad if you take it negatively, but I would like for us to be called “a group crazy for music” (smiles). Whenever I see videos of dancing, I think “There are artists who are crazy for music” and from now on, I will work hard until I hear people really call me a ‘crazy guy.’

Inkigayo Magazine - P.O.

[IT’S ME] I’m an only son so I received a lot of love growing up. I’m also a B bloodtype so I tend to get angry really fast, but now that I’m living with my hyungs, I can’t get angry. Since I’m the maknae, I have to just let everything go even if it’s not my fault. I’m also not the type to run errands for people, but I’ve grown so accustomed to it now that my body moves before I even think about it. I hate how I’m like this (laughter). On stage, I look charismatic, but I’m just the ‘cutie maknae’ to my hyungs.

[DREAM] My original dream was to become a theater actor so I applied for an arts high school. I’ve attended acting academies since I was in the fourth grade and worked as an extra in junior high. In my freshman year of high school, one of my teachers suggested that I try becoming a singer and introduced me to an audition. I did like to rap but I didn’t have a clear goal of becoming a rapper so I was scared. Once I arrived at the agency, I saw Zico and Kyung hyung rapping, and at that moment, I knew that this was what I wanted to do. I thought to myself, “Even if I fail this audition, I want to become a rapper. I know that if I pursue this path, I won’t ever regret it.” My dream of becoming a rapper was because of Zico and Kyung hyung. It was because of their amazing skills that I was able to find a clear dream.

[ON THE STAGE] “Wanna B” is an emotional song that features Zico and Kyung hyung’s high tone raps and my low tone rap at the end. I think that helped deliver the lyrics efficiently and help the public recognize my voice as well.

[EPISODE] Normally when we’re in our dorms, we’re usually doing stuff on our own on the laptop or working on songs. We were all watching TV together one day when A Pink came on the screen. I was watching without much thought until I randomly turned around and saw that every single one of them was staring intently at the screen. Watching them all sit and stare like that was hilarious! (laughter)

[TATTOO] I’m not the type to like tattoos, hennas, or piercing ears. Even if I don’t get a tattoo, I’d like to tattoo “become someone’s goal” in my heart. I want to work hard, and after time passes, I want students my age now to say my name when they’re asked, “What kind of singer do you want to be like?”

Block B

Producer Cho PD praised the talents of Big Bang while revealing that he was training his own boy band, Block B, with the support of big name hip hop veterans. The producer revealed that wanted to ensure that his boys would debut with all the right skills.

In his interview with Newsen, Cho PD stated, “Any idol singer should have the competence of musicians like Big Bang.”

Cho PD followed up by explaining how he trained the members of Block B to work on writing and composing about 100 songs over the course of their training period. In training them to become singer-songwriters, Cho PD hoped to expand their experience and competence level, as well as promote ‘expert ease’.

Composer Assbrass, who was praised as being a ‘prodigy’ before Cho PD scouted him, is in charge of Block B’s title and follow-up tracks, while hip hop veteran Rhymer is the producing head for the entire album.

Cho PD stated, “SM Entertainment has Yoo Young Jin and YG Entertainment has Teddy. The two companies are known for their in-house producers, and the sounds they produce have become trademarks for the labels. Under the support of Assbrass and Masterkey, Block B learned how to become musicians themselves and developed their own essence and sound.”

Block B members share the personal obstacles they faced in order to debut

Cho PD’s Block B finally unveiled themselves earlier today, and much attention is now being put on the individual members. Brand New Stardom was informed that all seven members endured their fair share of hardships before they came together to be the group they are today.

The group’s oldest, Jaehyo, was actually a trainee for B2ST but eventually had to give up his dreams and return home after injuring his knee with heavy rehearsals. When he received surgery for his knee, he was later encouraged by MBLAQ’s Lee Joon to stand up and try again. Under his support, Jaehyo mustered the bravery to try out once more, and fortunately passed.

Maknae P.O. was actually eliminated during the group’s first official audition. He tried out again a year later after losing 10 kg and training intensively to improve his vocals and dance skills. Cho PD watched over his progress, and decided to include him in the final line-up, opposing the voices encouraging him to drop P.O.

Cho PD’s personal ‘dark horse’, member U-Kwon, was also a trainee that failed his camera test in the beginning of their training. After the shock of the experience, he geared up his determination and came back for a second audition, essentially stunning everyone in the room with his favorable profile.

Kyung was chosen as a trainee while he was studying abroad in New Zealand, and is also one of the most experienced members of the group. He was dropped from the final line-up for Block B because Cho PD felt that he would be a better fit as a leader for another group. However, Kyung fasted for 10 days afterwards, and worked to prove himself once more in order to become a member of Block B, which eventually led Cho PD to give into Kyung’s determination.

Leader Zico, like the rest, was also dropped from the initial line-up because they felt that he didn’t have enough what it took to be a leader. According to Cho PD, a true leader needed to have the will to stand up eight times after failing seven. After suffering a brief period of depression, Zico picked himself up again and returned to wow the crowd for a second time.

Main vocalist Taeil is already well-known for being eliminated from MBC’s “Birth of A Great Star“. Taeil didn’t let that stop him, though, as he later tried out for Cho PD’s audition and passed, managing to go straight into recording for Block B’s title track.

Rounding out with member B-Bomb, the industry has their eyes set on these seven members and are already anticipating what they’ll be bringing to the table.
