4Minute’s Hyun Ah says, “I liked to get attention at first but not anymore”

4Minute’s Hyun Ah took some advice from No Hong Chul and Bae Doo Na. In the episode of KBS 2TV’s Talk Show Doo Du Rim that aired on May 12, Hyun Ah poured out her troubles in tears, saying, “I’m not sure if I’m going in the right direction.”
Host Kim Yong Man asked Hyun Ah, “What do you want to do if you get a break for a week?” and Hyun Ah said, “Even if I get a vacation for a week, I cannot go outside. I cannot live like anyone else. People will take pictures of me and upload them online.” Hyun Ah also honestly said, “I liked to get attention from people at first but not anymore.” At this, host No Hong Chul said, “Whenever I have time, I watch movie Spider Man. When I watch superhero films, I see that we, entertainers, have something in common with such superheros. They eventually win both the battles and other people’s love. Watching such films, I comfort myself that I’m not really going in the wrong direction.” Bae Doo Na also said, “I think it will be great if you can enjoy your life, taking some break. How about going slowly for a while?” After listening to Noh and Bae’s advice, Hyun Ah brightly smiled saying, “I was really touched by what you said.”

BtoB members talk about their passion for music in an interview with Kuki Media

When BtoB first emerged at their debut showcase on March 21st, it wasn’t just their impressive dance skills or vocal talent that floored the reporters gathered at the scene, but the honesty in which they talked about their dreams.

Leader and main vocalist Eunkwang stated, “I never thought that I’d be dancing. I started music because I loved singing, and I thought for sure that I’d be singing for the rest of my life. To come to where I’m standing today, I had to dance. I hated it at first since it was so hard, but now that I’ve debuted as an idol dance singer, I’m able to enjoy it more. I’m happy with the end result.”

Unlike idols who give the same recycled answer saying that they’ve wanted to become a singer since they were young, the boys were honest and straightforward. In fact, the members of BtoB weren’t chosen to become idols at first. Eunkwang, Hyunsik, and Changsub first joined as trainees for a band project under Cube Entertainment.

An official stated, “We chose the members of BtoB according to their vocal talent, not their visuals.”

Eunkwang continued, “I said this before at the showcase, but I mean it when I say that I didn’t think I’d be dancing. I was always under the impression that a singer must move the hearts of people through his voice only, and that’s the path that I wanted to walk. I thought about it a lot and realized having to dance and sing at the same time wasn’t an easy task, and definitely something that I had to overcome at my level. And just because I’m in an idol group doesn’t mean I still can’t move the hearts of people.”

When the members were asked to name a characteristic unique to their group, they unanimously replied, “All of the members have strong vocal talent.”

Hyungsik had dreamed of becoming a singer-songwriter and producer, while Sungjae had dreams of becoming a ballad vocalist. Peniel, who grew up in the States, enjoyed rock music, while Changsub always imagined a stage where he stood as a solo singer. Ilhoon wanted a freestyle stage despite being in a group.

It’s hard to believe that such a vocally ambitious bunch came together as an idol group focusing primarily on dance music, but the boys knew what their advantages and disadvantages are as well as what they hoped to achieve.

They concluded, “Before our debut, we discussed at length about what it meant to be a live dance singer. You can’t deny that there is a negative stereotype attached to idol groups, but we figured that if we showed our vocal talent through our live performances, they’d come through. We pay special attention to our live singing, and our goal for this album is to have our talents recognized. Of course, our future goals also include showing different images and succeeding, which we’ll work towards little by little.”

Battle between the rookies in Korea for the month of April as top idol groups concentrate on World Tours

While top idol groups are now concentrated in heading abroad for their overseas activities, rookie groups are now beginning to flourish in Korea.

Top idol groups, such as Big Bang, Super Junior, B2ST, and more, will be circulating around the globe for their world tours. While solo artists, such as IU and Kim Hyun Joong, will be greeting fans in Japan with the launch of their Japanese activities. Although fans in Korea will be unable to see their favorite artists, rookie idol groups are now emerging one by one and are proving that they are capable of taking over the previous generation.

One of the numerous rookie groups that have debuted in 2011 and stood out was five member boy group, B1A4. They were sucessfully able to capture the hearts of many noona fans with their past hits such as “Beautiful Target” and “My Love“. Now, they have made a comeback on the 14th with their new title song “Baby I’m Sorry” and with this they’ve topped various online music charts.

Rising girl group C-real, who has been nicknamed as the “5 IU’s” since their debut, have also returned with their brand new single, “JOMA JOMA“. With their goal of stealing the hearts’ of uncle fans, they have worked with hit making producers such as Shinsadong Tiger and Brave Brothers.

After successfully completing their debut showcase back in January, the boys of B.A.P have concluded promotions for their debut hit “Warrior” and shortly thereafter began follow-up promotions with “Secret Love“. Their strong and intense performance has earned an enormous amount of applause from netizens for their high quality performances on stage.

Meanwhile, Cube Entertainment and Pledis Entertainment have also unveiled their highly anticipated boy groups. Cube Entertainment’s BtoB, short for Born to Beat, has landed MC roles on SBS MTV‘s ‘The Show 2‘ immediately after their debut to showcase not only their vocal talent, but also their variety skills. On the other hand, Pledis’s rookie group NU’EST have become the stars of their new reality program ‘Making Of a Star NU’EST‘ and have been displaying their infinite amount of charms through the show. With both groups starting off on a great note, the two groups will definitely be worth keeping an eye on.

However, the debut of new groups don’t stop there. SM Entertainment, home to Girls’ Generation, Super Junior, f(x), and more, will finally be debuting their 12 member group, EXO, this coming April. Ever since the beginning of 2012, SM Entertainment has constantly been releasing teasers after teasers but now they will finally unveil the group to the public this Spring.

In addition, A Cube Entertainment‘s rookie singers A Pink and Huh Gak will also respectively be making their comebacks in the same month. As the two are known to have been hits last year, it’ll be interesting to see what they have in store for us this time.

Finally, M.I.B, aka ‘Most Incredible Busters‘, are also included in the list of those making a comeback in April. The hip-hop quartet joined the scene last fall with their debut single “G.D.M“. With well known hip-hop artists under their agency such as Drunken Tiger, LeeSsang, Tasha, etc., fans are highly anticipating their return to the K-Pop scene.

BtoB members reveal their thoughts after first debut stage

Fresh Cube Entertainment idol group BtoB (Born To Beat) expressed how they felt after their debut performance of “Insane” on ‘M!Countdown‘.

Member Lee Chang Sub commented, “First of all, we’re most happy that we can do our music. I thought more about what we’re going to do after our performance on ‘M!Countdown’. Right now my heart is fluttering and I’m extremely happy. I’ll continue working with this feeling in mind. Our debut showcase on the 21st and today’s performance felt different. That time we freely performed amongst ourselves, but today, even the air on stage was different. I felt ㅔㄱpressured,” revealing how nervous he felt before the group’s first televised performance as BtoB.

Lee Min Hyuk added, “In my case, I first showed my face on JTBC‘s ‘I Live in Cheongdamdong’. I portrayed a trainee dreaming of becoming a singer then, but I feel completely different today. I was first bewildered by the fans who came for us, who’ve only just debuted, then I had the thought that I should work really hard.”

BtoB agreed, “We don’t think we can be perfect from the start. But as we gain more and more [experience], we want to be an idol group that helps the Korean music industry shine.”

Entertainment agency representatives voice opinions on idol marriages

With the recent flurry of love scandals and many members of popular girl groups nearing the marriageable age, Sports Chosun was able to interview representatives from ten top music companies: Cube Entertainment, Happy Face Entertainment, Starship Entertainment, Core Contents Media, TS Entertainment, Star Empire Entertainment, Pledis Entertainment, DSP Media, and NegaNetwork.

The representatives voiced their opinions on important issues that idol groups face, including marriage, dating, and the age at which girl group members halt activities.

▶ Is marriage poisonous to girl groups?

The following investigation is from ten staff members who are part of the singing industry with girl groups. All replied, “Whatever is the case, we do not believe that marriage will positively affect the girl group’s image.”

The most important image for girl groups is ‘lovers of all men’. Even with small love scandals, the idea of being ‘one man’s woman’ will drastically take a hit on the popularity. Most importantly, however, it will negatively affect the whole team.

One representative revealed, “The daily pattern of an idol group is different from that of normal people. Whether it’s practicing throughout the night or having to swallow their schedule, they usually have to work until dawn for their next schedule. There is also an increasing trend of long-term overseas activities. In this situation, when a member marries, it naturally places a burden on the other members.”

With the potential of having one’s popularity drop due to marriage, this type of change would also create problems for the whole team, as it could hinder activities and schedules. The representative explained further, “If they do marry, they must consider entering different fields such as [becoming] MCs or actresses.”

▶ Is there a dating ban? Secret dating?

While we can state that marriage is a negative factor for girl groups, is simply dating a problem too?

While 2NE1‘s Sandara Park can happily say that she has been freed from the dating ban, other girl group members sadly cannot say the same thing.

Three reps revealed, “We prefer a dating ban because of management problems.” While it can be assumed that dating will pose problems to popularity, it could adversely affect other members.

The most strict period of management regarding dating usually takes place during the debut season. Usually, girl group members are in their teens and early 20s, a period in which their reasoning is sometimes overpowered by emotions. If the idols experienced the emotional turmoil of teenage dating, they would be overwhelmed by their emotions and could be scarred.

In addition, the agency and management also have an obligation to protect the artists and are even asked by parents to “manage problems in relation to the opposite sex,” Sports Chosun reports.

However, it is difficult for the management to enforce the restrictions on the idol members. When it comes down to it, dating lies within the privacy of the girl group member, as members can exchange their own passwords or various hand signals, and secretly date through Kakao Talk.

Although secret dating is preferred, idol group members also let their managers know. One representative stated, “Because the agency respects their personal lives, they want members to consult before they start dating. That way, the agencies can think of a corresponding method.”

Another representative shared another opinion, saying, “As they have to swallow various concepts on stage, those who experience love and separation have better expressive power. We approve dating to the extent that it does not burden the team.”

▶ Until what age can girl group members continue their activities?

About 30% of the representatives had voted that the boundary should be around mid-30s. As girl groups usually need to show off their sexiness and cute charms, it is difficult for 30 year old women to go through with the cute concepts.

However, the other side stated, “Age is not important.” Lee Hyori is one example as she is still continuing her activities, showing that appeal and personal care are more important than age. In addition, even if members are relatively old, they are part of a team who promote activities together, diminishing the hindrances that age can pose.

Debut age also comes into play as an issue. Five to six years after a debut, activities can become tiring as girl group members consider entering other fields. This has led to many idols entering the fields of entertainment or acting.

Share your thoughts on Sport Chosun’s in-depth editorial in the comments section below: do you think the reasons behind the dating restrictions are fair, or do you think they should be changed?

B2ST’s Junhyung asserts he is still seeing Goo Hara

The K-Pop fandom was thrown into turmoil when news leaked out earlier, claiming that KARA‘s Goo Hara and B2ST‘s Junhyung were no longer a couple.

Although the reports seemed to have been verified by insiders at the time, both agencies quickly refuted the allegation, resulting in the curious case of agencies actually denying that a couple was not dating.

“After checking, the two of them are still meeting. We cannot understand how these articles came to be. The rumors of their breakup have no footing in truth,” said a representative for KARA.

Cube Entertainment echoed the above message, saying, “Although we haven’t checked with him, we haven’t heard anything about their potential split. As far as we are aware, they are still dating.”

A few minutes later, Junhyung replied with his own statement, “I am still in a relationship with Goo Hara. I think the rumors came about since we have had less time to meet each other.”

B2ST talks about being compared to 2PM & Big Bang

B2ST has been named the strongest competitor for Big Bang and 2PM thanks to their recent streak of success, but the boys themselves don’t think so.

In an interview with E Daily, the members of B2ST opened up about their competition and the direction of their career. The boys began, “We’ve been really happy lately, and have even begun wondering whether we’ve ever received such love since our debut.”

On 2PM and Big Bang, they revealed, “A lot of people compare us to Big Bang and 2PM and say that we’re at the height of our fame. Although we feel good hearing that, it’s also scary. We honestly think that it’s too early for us to hear such praise.”

They continued, “If we’re already at the height of our fame, then there’s no way to go but down. We still think we have a long road left and promise to work hard at everything as if it was our first time.”

B2ST will also be going on an Asian tour soon after their Japanese promotions. Countries include Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, and China.

Cube Entertainment said, “Due to the requests made by fans in each country, we’ve decided to create a fan-meeting. Fans can consider it a tour concert in style.”
